Description
If you are looking for a plant that is tough as nails and blooms from spring through fall, then guara may be a great fit for your garden. With white or pink flowers, guara is a Texas native that loves full sun and tolerates drought. The blooms have earned it the common name of Whirling Butterflies since it gives the impression of butterflies flitting in the breeze when the wind is blowing. The flowers also attract hummingbirds.
Gaura grows in clumps that can be 2’ to 4’ high and just as wide. The leaves are long and skinny with slightly serrated leaves. The plant produces long, thin stalks that are often red to burgundy in color. The inch-long flowers have four petals and grow along these stems. Guara does not like to be moved from place to place, so they should be planted where they can remain for several years. Plant them into a full sun area with rich soil and deep drainage. Once established, guara requires very little care. Water and fertilization needs are minimal once the plant is established, usually when they reach 3 feet in height and blooms appear.
