Loropetalum

Description

The Loropetalum, an evergreen shrub that looks good in just about any landscape, is also known as Chinese witch hazel or Chinese fringe flower and puts on a beautiful show in spring with small, frilly flowers, typically pink. It is native to China, Japan, and the Himalayas and is a member of the witch hazel family.

Its name is derived from the Greek words for strap and petal, referring to the long, thin petals of its fringe-like blooms. With handsome, burgundy-colored foliage as a backdrop for the bright, fringed flowers that bloom in the spring, this fast-growing evergreen shrub can fill a hole in a flower border, create a foil for other silvery shrubs or flowering perennials and contrasts nicely with other plants. It's often used as an accent plant for its beautiful floral display. Loropetalum can either be maintained as a small shrub or allowed to grow anywhere from 6 to 15 feet tall. If you prefer to keep its naturally wispy look as small shrub, avoid over pruning and carefully choose which limbs to cut back. With its moderate growth rate, it works well as a screening plant, hedge, or border.
