Lavender

Description

With its silvery-green foliage and upright fragrant spikes of tiny, delicate flowers, Lavender, an herb with many culinary uses, also makes a stunning addition to gardens, pots, containers and borders while providing beautiful sweeps of color from early summer into fall. It also makes a wonderful addition to floral arrangements for your home both for its color and fragrance as well as sachets and potpourri. With its Mediterranean origin, lavender loves the blazing hot sun and dry soil and can be grown in gardens or pots and containers.

Under the right conditions, lavender will last for several years. If it doesn’t thrive, it’s most likely due to overwatering, too much shade and high humidity levels. Lavender requires well-drained soil, especially during the winter months. To ensure good drainage, mix a little sand or gravel into the soil before you plant and instead of applying moisture-holding mulches, consider using rocks or stones, especially in humid climates. Once established, lavender is very low-maintenance and requires minimal watering or pruning. If the stems become woody as the plant matures, prune it back by about half its height in the spring to promote fresh new growth and hearty flowering.
