Bi-Color Iris

Description

The Bicolor Iris, also known as the African Iris, features showy spikes of creamy white, orchid-like flowers with orange overtones and black spots rising above the foliage from mid spring to mid fall. Its attractive, narrow, sword-shaped evergreen leaves create a perfect backdrop for the beautiful blooms that last a day and are quickly replaced with a new one. It typically blooms in bursts of two week intervals with each flower stalk containing several buds on each one. Bicolor Irises will grow to be about 24 inches tall at maturity with a spread of 24 inches. The flowers are excellent for cutting.

Plant in full sun to partial shade and if you want your Bicolor Iris to bloom as much as possible, remove the seed pods as they begin to form, and once flowering is done, you simply cut the flower stem to the ground. They prefer to grow in moist to wet soil, will even tolerate some standing water and are not particular as to a specific soil type. In addition to being a great choice for beds, it also makes an excellent choice for planting in outdoor pots and containers. With its upright habit of growth, plant it near the center of a pot surrounded by smaller plants and those that spill over the edges to make a striking display.
